It was useful when communications were done over long distances with shitty quality (by today’s standards) audio transmissions. You wanted to be able to get your point across ricky tick and didn’t want it to be misunderstood. And you sure as hell didn’t want to repeat yourself 5 times.
But with today’s high end communications, digital tech and the ability to send text messages to HUDs and handhelds there is zero reason to use so many acronyms and initialisms.
It is this reason that most police/emergency forces in the US are going clearspeak.
