The fine sounds familiar (brother got a med out of basic), but it was more of an out-processing procedure fee. Still got a DD214 but had some code on it that indicated separation prior to basic graduation, which made him ineligible for scholarships and such, of course. Record was still kept on file, and turned up when he tried again to go AF, and was denied for his fucked up feet. Sorry if I’m coming off like I know anything about your dads situ – not my intention. You just sounded unsure of parts of his explanation and I’m just tossing out there the general process at the time. Sounds like he got a legit med that blocked any re-enlistment with his hernia, but may be fluffing the story a bit – but every word of it could be true for all I know.
