I’m gonna wade in here: I’m a Brit and an emergency relief worker for a number of years (head of emergency response for an international NGO in SE Asia) and I’ve seen a fair amount of the world’s not-spots and I’ve seen kids starve to death. I have also lived in some of the shittier parts of North Philadelphia. It might not be that extreme, but America does have poverty problems, it really does. I was shocked at how run-down my neighborhood was in Philly, how drugs and violence seemed to dominate daily life and I was horrified by the aggression of the police – even to me, when I was clearly a white English kid. I was also appalled by the level of poverty that I found just totally unacceptable in the First World. Other countries having worse problems doesn’t make America’s failings acceptable.
