The fully enclosed, rapid deployment came out of the R&D of WWII. Pre-atomic bomb drop there were serious plans for a full amphibious and airborne landing on mainland Japan. If that were to happen people were predicting years more of war, and untold casualties on both sides. If that were the case these would be replacing some of the towed artillery units. Thankfully the war ended in 45. Some of the vehicles would go on to wider spread production, seeing service in Korea, and abroad.
