> is looked at to even replace the old A10.
It’s role as CAS is more in the vain of that of the F-16 it’ll replace. You know that F-16 that did the most (and best pinpoint) cas missions. The F-35 will be a significant upgrade in that aspect with more range, ordnance carried and faster cruise toward the objective as well as all that other stuff like loitering with data links and advanced optics.
The A-10s as a whole are a very old air-frame and their maintenance upkeep is growing exponentially each year. There might not be an envisioned need for a 1:1 successor to the A-10 that will in any case probably lose the heavy cannon that is increasingly ineffective against modern armor. Faster attack and scout helicopters, upgraded gunships, the F-35 to take over F-16, More recon and armed drones.
> It just seems redundant to keep the expensive F22 when there is the F35 which is classified as the same generation fighter that does much more.
F-22 still has better rcs, has thrust vectoring, double engines for more range and faster speed and is exclusive to the US as its Air-superiority fighter better outfitted to fit large bvr missiles and is better at long range and close range air combat than the F-35, the US wants to keep that edge. In any case there’s already a program underway to replace the F-22 and F15E(?)
