Pet-peeve, ergo *rant*:
This is *not* Sparta! War used to be mostly a matter of warriors. No more. The last war when more soldiers died than civilians was World War I. After that forget it. In World War II for example, the Anglo-Americans killed relatively few actual German soldiers (80-90% of whom were killed by the Soviets). The pervasive Hollywood bullshit industry notwithstanding, what they actually did was to purposely target cities and population centres, mostly killing the German soldiers’ families back home … civilians almost exclusively.
As for Iraq ext., attacking (under false pretences) people who never did anything to them or their country, the ‘*smart*'(!) weapons must have apparently been at the hands of imbeciles because they again killed many more civilians than soldiers.
And now … with the increasing use of *unmanned machine drones* (apparently controlled by unmanly human ones) they have barely cogent US trailer-trash wipe out actual real living Afghani families as if playing a computer game … without really understanding why and from complete safety, with no danger to themselves whatsoever, going to the corner mac D’s on their break.
So, it rather seems that far from ‘*the best*’, of courage, honour and ability, the increasingly *un*-natural selection or modern tech warfare kills innocent families while protecting the clueless imbeciles murdering them.
And pretty soon actual human soldiers won’t feature at all in war.
