Hinds just look cool and mean, which was not at all accurately represented by the lame-ass frankenchoppers used in Red Dawn and Rambo 3.
However, the effectiveness of the design was ultimately rather dubious. The Soviets tried to combine an attack heli with a transport (the thing can carry a squad into battle) and ended up making too many performance compromises in order to achieve this.
When carrying a weapon payload and troops, it could barely take off, needing a runway to get going. Its original weapons payload was not very impressive: a .50 cal nose gun, combined with pods of underpowered and inaccurate S-5 rockets. Although it is very well-armored, the troop compartment made it a big and clumsy target. Also, the original engine exhaust vents configuration made it a MANPADS magnet.
However, these things sure did put the fear of god into ~~Hajis~~ Mujis, Chechis and more recently, The Georgians. Hajis called it “The Satan’s Chariot”.
Edit: Corrected “SA-5” to “S-5”.
