Relevant post I made earlier regarding the M777:
>My input for this picture would be just how impressive of an improvement the M777 is over the M198. The M777 had very big shoes to stand beside and eventually fill as the M198 is considered a legacy piece in the US arsenal in service.
>40 percent lighter than the M198, a large portion of the M777 is produced with titanium alloys, the “legs” that the firing block and barrel are mounted on are entirely titanium that help bring the weight down to under 10k pounds this allows for the weapons to be transported by the vast majority of military vehicle to be able to transport it, including the chinook helicopter and the newly operational V-22(not to mention that you can fit two into a C-130 compared to the 1 m198 that you could fit into the same aircraft.).
>The next impressive fact is the computerized targeting and gps enabled systems and ammunition. These features creates a much more accurate artillery battery(the army has repeatedly put rounds in a 30 meter circle at 15 miles) and increased range(while the system is rated to 25 miles targets have been engaged in Afghanistan effectively at 22 miles) the longest operational shots fired by an M198 are 14 miles with conventional ammunition and 18 miles with rocket assisted ammunition, both at a much lower accuracy tolerances.
>The overall increase in efficiency of the platform creates a much more lethal battlefield picture. Picture the Marine expeditionary unit that just blasted a hole into the side of your country in less than 72 hours and then in comes a battery of 4 M777s underslung on V22s at 200mph leapfrogging to an area that may have already been cleared using the help of another battery of M777s and once that battery lands and is set up in less than 3 hours, they can be sending ammunition 20 miles in any direction, out ranging your artillery by at least 5 miles and incredibly more accurate. If this was not a testament to the power of the US military machine, keep in mind that if each of these rounds has a lethal radius of 150-200 meters and can be delivered to an area of less than 30 meters, a single volley of 4 howitzers could clear 800 meters worth of circular area of life and light equipment, such as artillery.
