not sure, but the issue appeared on planes which were based out of arctic air bases. one famous indecent on the evening of valentines day in 1950 ended in the US airforces first “broken arrow”, which is code for a lost nuclear weapon. B-36 075 was send down the BC coast line from its base in alaska to do a simulated bombing run on San Fransisco, from there it would have gone inland and landed at its home base in texas. while on the BC coast line 3 of the B36s propeller driven engines caught fire. with half its power gone the pilot ordered the planes bomb be dropped unarmed over the pacific. the plane still could not be saved and the crew bailed out of Princes Royal Island. the planes auto pilot was programed to crash into the pacific ocean, but instead the plane, almost as though it was still piloted, turned around and ended up crashed in the BC interior mountains near the town of Smithers BC.
