Afghanistan’s production originates from the Opium Wars — the British. The East India Trading Company (EIC) facing no silver to trade in China cleverly had locals (now Afghanistan and Pakistan) plant opiates to then barter for silver to get the tea market back to UK flowing again. It’s important to note that China was unique that the west was “gold standard” while China was silver. When resistance from China stopped the flow of opium trade and the Tea shortage hit UK the Monarchy gave full support of Royal Navy. This is broken into two wars (first and second), but to suffice to say the Royal Navy shelled the key targets of the entire south to north coast of China submitting China into Tea trade agreement to their like (and allies of France, Russia, USA) called the Treaties of Tientsin.
One also important note, USA was really upset learning her involvement had been over opiates. If you read the history most allies role were minor and in the case of USA I do suspect it to be true (shrugs).
Note: intention is not political, but to empower with understanding for present and possible future conflicts.
